Finally found this photo from an East London alleyway (circa 2014). It's popped into my head many, many times in the past five years working in cyber policy. So much of what is cutting edge knowledge in DC is several years old among the community.

Great work by & the COVID Task Force on measuring the consequences of pandemic-elevated strains that hospitals are experiencing. TL;DR: As ICU beds fill, non-Covid excess deaths accelerate. Let's get in front of flu season!

TL;DR: IT disruptions like Ransomware delay, degrade, and deny patient care, causing more deaths. The and publications can inform and embolden policymakers and corporate leadership to take preventative action. Spread the word.

As the paper makes clear, national (and likely global) staffing and supply shortages have caused total healthcare capacity to dip, while total occupancy has increased from COVID patients. A Ransomware attack against healthcare is especially harmful in these conditions.

For many other patients, the outcomes become more negative due to the delay, making it more likely they'll have to stay longer with more intensive treatment. Higher occupancy rates.

In addition, patients scheduled for non-urgent visits are rescheduled when hospitals are over capacity. Some of those patients succumb to their diseases before they can be treated. Higher excess deaths.

When a hospital's ability to deliver care is impaired, they may divert incoming patients to other facilities. Total occupancy across the region increases.

When diagnostic, treatment, and records systems are down, each case requires more time and attention from ICU staff. Total capacity decreases.

Ransomware can impact lab results, diagnostic imaging, and medical records hospitals rely on to improve consistency, efficiency, and timeliness of care. Without these benefits, more patients stay in more ICU beds for longer. Total occupancy rises.

The Insights publication from September shows how cyberattacks can push the rate to more dangerous levels by reducing total capacity and increasing occupancy.

High hospital occupancy rates (from any source) lead to excess deaths. Important reading for . Also important corroboration for work showing that cybersecurity impacts can increase excess deaths. 🧵

At we’re big fans of pay transparency. On the JD the pay is listed, all aspects of compensation are discussed in the first recruiter call, and the pay for that position/level is the same company wide (no negotiations) to limit abuse and biases.
